At a local high-needs charter school, I led a literacy intervention initiative focused on creating culturally responsive interventions. This approach was not only aimed at improving literacy skills but also at engaging students in a way that honored and sustained their cultural identities. It provided a space where students could show up more wholly and authentically, allowing them to connect with the material on a deeper level.

Foundation of the Intervention

Using the Fountas and Pinnell assessment tools, we tracked student growth throughout the school year, which revealed a critical need to focus on phonics for the students that were determined to benefit from literacy interventions. We employed research-based strategies from the science of reading, transforming these into culturally responsive activities. These phonics games were designed to promote collaboration rather than competition, encouraging students to work together—whether the goal was to beat a previous time record or achieve a collective blackout in a game, emphasizing mutual support over individual competition.

Data-Driven Results

The outcomes of this culturally tailored approach were significant. Within just six weeks, students demonstrated an impressive average growth of 3.8 Fountas and Pinnell levels. This growth not only highlighted the effectiveness of the intervention in boosting literacy skills but also underscored the critical role of culturally responsive methods in education. By aligning educational strategies with students' cultural contexts, we facilitated a deeper and more meaningful learning experience. Remarkably, whether students received these interventions online or in-person, there was no significant difference in their average growth, further proving the efficacy of a culturally responsive approach. This approach can even transcend technological constraints, ensuring that all students benefit, regardless of the learning environment.

Beyond Literacy

The impact of these interventions extended far beyond literacy enhancement, demonstrating the broader benefits of culturally responsive education across all learning areas. By incorporating and reflecting students' cultural backgrounds and promoting collectivist strategies, students felt more valued and understood. This not only enriched their overall educational experience but also fostered a stronger sense of community and belonging in the classroom, which positively influenced their learning outcomes.

Moreover, these benefits were not limited to students from collectivist cultures. Students from other cultural backgrounds also developed a deeper sense of belonging through cooperation and collaboration. These approaches enhanced their social-emotional skills, compassion, and ability to work effectively with others, creating a more inclusive and empathetic learning environment for all.

Conclusion

These literacy interventions show the transformative potential of culturally responsive curriculum development and instructional practices for all students. Such initiatives do more than improve academic outcomes; they create inclusive educational spaces that recognize and celebrate the diverse backgrounds of everyone, fostering an environment where every student feels supported and valued.
